Connie O’Brien for Kansas

STATE BOARD of EDUCATION
District 4
The Problem Is Not A Lack Of Money!
Private Schools Are Not Consuming Public Funds
- The State of Kansas does not divert any public funds to private schools nor is there any plan to do so.
- Also, in general, private schools and homeschoolers do not want any government funds.
- There is no threat of private schools taking money that is designated for public schools.
Public Schools Are More Expensive Than Private Schools
The state of Kansas is currently spending on average $18,000 per student per year for every child in a public school! The tuition for private schools in the State of Kansas are as follows:
- $8,218 Google
- $8,218 Kansas Private School Review
- $7,768 Raise Right
That is about $10,000 less tuition cost than a public school. According to Google, there are 478,585 students in the State of Kansas. Private schools produce a better education with less money compared to public schools.
Wise Money Management Is Needed, Not More Money
- Kansas public schools do not have a lack of funds, they have a lack of wisely using the money they have received.
- Property taxes keep going up and the main recipient of the funds is the public schools.
- Increasing funds to public schools means increasing your property taxes. That is where the schools get their funding, from you, the tax payer.
The Problems Are:
Parents Voices Are Not Heard
The school should not be the instiller of values in children, the parents should. Social and emotional issues are best left to the parents.
Inappropriate Content Is Being Pushed By The Schools
- Only books that are age appropriate should be allowed in our public schools
- No pornography
- No books with explicit sexual content
- No literature promoting gender identity
- Sex education should focus on the biological differences between men and women and the science of human reproduction only
No Liberal Indoctirnation
- No Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI)
- No Social, Emotional, Learning (SEL)
- No transgender nonsense.
The Solutions Are:
Local Control
Local School Board members have authority over many things including the hiring or firing of a school superintendent. The Kansas Legislature controls the funding for education in Kansas. It’s up to School Board members to decide how that money is being spent.
Parental Involvement
It’s parents and voters in the district that elect school board members. We need to listen and encourage these voters, especially the parents, to be involved in the decision making process.
Student Opportunities
Not every student needs to go to college. Vo-tech education provides students with the opportunity to learn a skilled trade such as HVAC, welding, culinary, construction, plumbing, electrical, mechanic, and small appliance repair. All of these skills lead to good paying jobs. Jobs that are in high demand. Students that complete this training make good money and they are not straddled with college debt.
School Accountability
The Kansas Department of Education is required to put a school accountability report on-line for all school districts. This website covers a plethora of topics such as, High School Graduation Rate, Success Rate, Effective Rate, Math Scores, Science Scores, English Language Arts Scores and Spending Per-Pupil just to mention a few. Information concerning school accountability can be found by typing in www. (Your local school USD number) followed by .org
